Cogshall #2 Mango Tasting
This is why it is important not to judge a cultivar off on one season's fruit. Last year, our Cogshall mangos were great. This year, we had a major drought and most of our mango trees had 2-3 bloom cycles. Valerie is brutally honest with her thoughts on this mango.
We will be tasting mangos all summer and sharing our thoughts.

February - Blueberries, Mangos, Jackfruit
Last month, the bees were busy pollinating all of the blueberry flowers. Every single flower seemed to get pollinated. The blueberry bushes are loaded with fruit now. Our favorite blueberry varieties for the Sarasota area are Sunshine Blue, Jewel, Pink Lemonade, and Gulf Coast...with Sunshine blue being our favorite for productivity.
The mango trees are continuing to bloom and set fruit. We have several 7 gallon Pickering mangos available with fruit set along with one of the Nam Doc Mai mangos. If you are looking for healthy mango trees to plant in your own yard, check our currently availability in the tab at the top of the page to see if we have the variety you are looking for. We are happy to give recommendations as well.
Our jackfruit trees have been happily growing.
This is one of our grafted trees with 3 in-arch seedling grafts to provide additional roots to fuel the growth of the trees.

Mallika Mango
The Mallika Mango is a wonderful choice for Florida backyard growers.
It is a semi-dwarf, Indian dessert variety that is a hybrid between Neelum and Dasheri. We planted this particular tree last year and it has been one of the best producers. Mallika is also disease resistant and considered one of the best tasting mangos.
Mallika mangos are typically picked mature green.
It is very east to tell when they are ready - simply cup the mango with your hand and lift gently until the mango is lifted no more than 45 degrees. If it is ready, it will break from the stem (former panicle) into your hand. A clear sap will ooze from the attachment.
Now, it is time to place the green mango into a cardboard box or better yet, a paper bag inside a cardboard box. Ripening can take 10-21 days. Fruit can be refrigerated once ripe/yellow. The flesh is a beautiful deep orange - sweet, aromatic, and fiberless.
A Mallika Mango tree is a great mango for backyard growers, and is small enough to be kept potted for those without yard space.
